Trauma & PTSD

STAR incorporates revolutionary approaches in treating trauma and PTSD. We think of trauma as distress that lingers following experiencing a harmful event, or series of events, such as physical, emotional or sexual abuse, accidents, natural disasters or deaths. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) results from severe or multiple traumas that continue to have an ongoing and devastating impact upon one’s life.

A trauma survivor may experience prolonged anxiety, distressing flashbacks and dreams, hyper-vigilance, sleep difficulties, and problems with relationships. Alternately, the trauma may cause depression and numbness. Often trauma survivors don’t see a connection between the traumatic event and their current problems.

A trauma survivor needs a safe and supportive environment as well as specialized treatment in order to resolve past negative experiences that interfere with living fully in the present moment. STAR Retreats provide the most advanced and effective methods for helping trauma survivors regain their lives by integrating the latest research and clinical methods from neuroscience, attachment, somatic psychology and trauma research. These include processes that help rewire the brain and enable the body to reset its incoming messages that warn of danger, thus promoting a feeling of safety and wellbeing.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, psychiatrist, author and trauma researcher reminds us that we cannot talk our way out of trauma. We must treat trauma through having mindful, relational experiences in present time, in the body. He states, “The single most important issue for traumatized people is to find a sense of safety in their own bodies.”** We also know that our response to trauma is largely dependent on our early attachment experiences.

STAR Retreats can provide a proven net of safety and special support that offers the survivor an opportunity to finally seek resolution from painful events of the past. Our competent facilitators help you find the courage to face and heal trauma, so that you go home with skills and tools to create a meaningful and satisfying life.
