I’ve had many clients who succeeded in that endeavor. They talk to me about how empty and disconnected they feel. They have all the “good stuff” but along the way they have lost something of great value. Themselves. Many refer to it as their soul.
In pursuing authenticity, something more may be required of us. The mind is powerful, it can harm or heal, create fear or compassion. We can feel totally authentic and be misdirected and damaging. And we will fight to defend it. Perhaps we need to include compassion along with Becoming Authentic?
In my search for becoming authentic, the viralization of people felt very disruptive to me. Maybe we really do create our own reality with our minds. Maybe everything is really an illusion. If it is real to the individual it is authentic—to that person. I mean REALITY TV is real. Is pretending to be a survivor or whatever the role is, an authentic endeavor? There certainly appears to be REAL money in it.
I’m in a profession where, like priests in a confessional, confidentiality is sacred. What’s Right With Reality TV questions the whole idea of privacy. “Now the default setting is publicity, not privacy.” In the words of “Rachel” from some Real program, “Nowadays being anonymous is worse than being poor."
In the course of therapy people do begin to look a little shabby. Your eyes do not drop out, but old perceptions about yourself and your life begin to fall away and you see things more clearly. You get a little loose in the joints, as you express yourself more freely and release stuck places both in your mind and body.

Another holiday gift-giving time has passed. In progressing on a path of becoming authentic, holidays can be challenging. I hate feeling the pressure to get something—anything—for the sake of protocol and expectations. We are like lemmings rushing off the cliff to finish our MUST DO list.
