What the Healing Work of STAR Makes Possible

What the Healing Work of STAR Makes Possible

By Candace Rosen, L.C.S.W.

My life experience has been my most valuable teacher. I grew up in an alcoholic family and as a result, I have been committed to helping people to heal and recover from grief and loss. I lost my parents to alcoholism at an early age and then, the death of my 22 year old son and my divorce after 30 years of marriage, were valuable spiritual experiences, which deepened my compassion and helped make me the person I am today. My whole life experience has been a journey of recovery and learning to thrive in the face of adversity and thus, helping others to survive and thrive through their losses.

I have always known at a deep spiritual level that I was meant to do healing work and this is my life's purpose. I have known since I was very young that I would become a healer and I have worked for the last 22 years as a therapist in mental hospitals, agencies, and in private practice doing healing work. I have been facilitating at STAR for 12 years and feel so privileged to be able to do this work. I knew almost immediately, that I wanted to do the deep, healing work that we do at STAR, when I participated in my own STAR workshop. Doing STAR changed my life in a very big way and I will always be grateful for that.

After doing STAR, I made the huge leap to end a very unhappy, dysfunctional marriage and really became much more self-actualized and independent. I had always wanted to paint and express myself through art and I gave myself permission to begin expressing myself in this way. My mother was a painter and always led me to believe that, while I had many gifts and talents, art was not one of them. I now paint in oil and watercolor and acrylic, do collage, make jewelry, and create beautiful knitted and embellished scarves. I am an artist now and I also use art and sand tray to help others heal. This is very fulfilling for me. I cannot imagine living my whole life without ever having tried creating and healing in this way and I am eternally thankful to STAR for having given me the courage to express myself artistically.

I am now learning and studying the brain science and mindfulness theories and how attachment styles affect each of us and our relationships. I am also very interested in working with the body and somatic therapy. I am learning and creating in a way that never would have been possible, if I had not gone to STAR 12 years ago and done my deep, healing work. I never realized, before I did STAR, how important birth work is and how my own premature birth and being in an incubator for several weeks affected me. I have done a lot of healing birth work and now I do birth regression work at STAR and value it highly.

My life has been healed and enriched in such an important way because of STAR. I love all of the STAR facilitators and feel blessed to be able to work with them and be a part of this wonderful, healing community and tribe.
